The risks for modern-day street merchants abound: exposure to extortion, violence, unhealthy sidewalk conditions, and all of it in addition to the burden of being breadwinners in a developing nation, amid the mounting vicissitudes of life.
I imagine that–as any parent would–these individuals want to give a better future to their children, but their starting line is so far behind ours. While brainstorming ways to engage and be of some help, I commenced this series to celebrate their dignity and inherent worth, regardless of where they are in their journey out of poverty. It just seemed like the right place to start.
